Abstract
Craniofacial development and orthodontic
treatment outcomes are significantly influenced by the physiology and
functional dynamics of orofacial muscles. This review explores the structural,
physiological, and reflex-based roles of skeletal muscle in orthodontics. Key
themes include muscle tissue types, contraction mechanisms, neuromuscular
coordination, and therapeutic implications. Additionally, the role of muscle
training, neuromuscular disorders, and orthodontic appliance interaction with
musculature are discussed. A multidisciplinary understanding of muscle
physiology enhances orthodontic diagnosis, appliance design, and post-treatment
stability.
