Backgroud: Oral
health problems can occur easily. The most common and one of the biggest burden
diseases is dental caries. Caries occurred in children aged five with a very
high index. Children are susceptible to oral health problems, including dental
caries and also a low levels of oral hygiene. Preschool children are one of the
age groups with a high risk of experiencing caries. They tend to consume sweet
drinks and beverages. The higher consumption of this sugar can have a greater
impact on the condition of children's tooth decay.
Aim: This
study aims to explore the correlation between a high-sugar diet and oral health
outcomes in preschool children.
Materials and Methods:
This study was an analytic observational which was conducted in 2023. The
population of this study was parents and the preschool children who were
admitted to the playgroup and kindergarten in South region of Surabaya. The
total of the participants was 252.
Results:
There is a correlation between a high-sugar diet with dental caries and oral
hygiene significantly (p-value < 0.05). Children who eat more high-sugar
foods or drinks will susceptible to a higher number of caries and causes more
plaque to adhere to the teeth surface.
